Fernwood is an Australian owned business that operates around 70 female-only health clubs across all states and territories. With around 70,000 members, Fernwood is an extremely popular choice for women looking to improve their fitness and feel good about themselves.

Everything at Fernwood is tailored towards meeting the needs of women of all fitness levels. This includes specialised training equipment, group fitness classes, a non-intimidating atmosphere, shower/change facilities with female focused amenities and much more.

“Our goal is to empower women to shine, by giving them the confidence they need to succeed in all they do.”

Fernwood Fitness

Fernwood have a very strong introductory program focussing on your first 28 days. No matter what level of experience you are, it will get you up and going.

  • You get access to the Your Fernwood program (previously called 28 Day Breakthru). This is designed to get you started and provides information on nutrition, workout programs and mindset
  • Meet with a Fitness Coach on your first visit to set yourself up with realistic goals and a program to help you reach your fitness goals
  • Access to a free cardio and strength training workshop to get you feeling confident on the gym floor

Facilities and Services

Each Fernwood club provides a huge range of equipment and services to help you on your fitness journey. There is an extensive range of cardio and weight machines as well as a free weights area. There’s room for you to do your own circuits and floor exercises as well as high-intensity exercise zones. Most of the cardio equipment also have dedicated TV’s and music so you can connect your headphones and distract your mind as you train your body.

Fernwood provides a large range of classes from high-intensity interval-style training (like the tailored FIIT30 and FIITRIGHT programs), Zumba and Barre, to lower intensity styles like tai-chi, pilates (Reformer Pilates available at some locations) and yoga. They also run mindfulness classes such as meditation. To get a full list of the classes provided and session times, contact your local Fernwood. While most classes are included as part of your membership, some tailored classes like FIIT30 and FIITRIGHT are an additional cost. Make sure you ask about this before you join.

Sessions with a personal trainer (PT) are available at Fernwood. Each personal trainer can have their own style and specialisations so it’s important that you find the one that you’re comfortable training with. If PT sessions are a core part of your desired fitness regime, then we always recommend you try a session or two within a free trial period before you join on a long term contract. If the free trial isn’t an option or it isn’t long enough for you to decide if the PT you’re using is right for you, ask about shorter-term contracts. They are more expensive but cheaper than finding you don’t like any of the PT’s and having to pay the remainder of your contract. You can always switch to a longer-term, cheaper contract when you’re ready.

As well as personal training, you’ll also have access to food and nutrition coaching.

What sets Fernwood apart from most other gyms are the added perks tailored to females. They include free daily breakfast as well as hair products, straighteners and hair dryers in the change rooms. Most clubs also provide creche services for your young children at an additional cost.

Opening Hours

Members can access most Fernwood clubs 24/7 for training. If you’d like to attend when staff are present, you’ll need to contact your local club as staffed hours are more limited. Each club can have different staffed hours.

Fernwood Age Restrictions

Fernwood allows girls as young as 14 years to join as long as the membership agreement is signed by a parent or guardian. The parent/guardian must take full responsibility for the membership. Members under the age of 18 cannot access 24-hour clubs outside of staffed hours unless accompanied and supervised by another member of the same club who is at least 18 years old. Girls aged 14-15 must be accompanied by their mother (who must also be a member) at all times.

Fernwood Pricing Guide

Fernwood has several membership options with the 12-month contract option being the most affordable. Pricing starts at $22 per week (about $95 per month). There are flexible membership options for periods starting at 2 weeks so speak to your local club to discuss what options they have available.

You’ll usually have to pay a joining fee of $199 as well as an Activation Kit fee. The Activation Kit gives you 24-hour access and some additional benefits. Check out our Latest Offers page to see if there are any current special offers at Fernwood. Also, you may be able to get your joining fees waived or reduced by asking at your local club before you join. This is because they sometimes have offers for new members that aren’t advertised.

Fernwood usually offers a free 7-day trial. There is a 48-hour cooling-off period although a fee is applicable for cancellations during the cooling-off period.

Went from bad to worse

Save your time, money and mental health and stay FAR away from this place. Owner is a nutcase and staff are clearly very negatively effected when she is around. Despite being "24/7", most equipment gets locked away when staff are not around so you really only have the option of an outdated treadmill or broken elliptical... forget about being able to do weights or any sort of functional training unless you're able to come in during the day. Membership prices are raised without notice for EXISTING members as well - so whatever you negotiated to pay per week is completely disregarded without a second thought or explanation.
